Because I recently wanted to pick up my old hobby again (making collages) I saw interesting prints of photos on the internet and that's how I ended up in a short live gel print course in Holland. I had never heard of gel print before. I learned a few basic techniques and kept looking and searching on the internet and that's how I discovered Jane's beautiful work. And I was immediately idolized by her art, her way of explaining, her own style, her craftsmanship, the beauty of her prints. So when Jane started a course online (with the technique, how to photograph and edit, how to print) it was a gift from heaven for me. I bought the course, actually to start at 10 July (vacation, now way too busy with work). But in the meantime I was so curious, that I have watched almost the entire course. Learned a lot and I’ve been inspired a lot more. In two weeks when my vacation starts I will have time to really practice and create by myself and study more. I can't wait. Later more, but yet already 10 stars. Thanks Jane. It's wonderful and inspiring to watch and listen to you.🙏

As life goes, it took me awhile to get through the course, and at that I did not find the time to do all the tasks assigned; that I can return to it time and time again is a comfort. I signed up for this course because I was VERY frustrated with the image transfer process even though I had watched MANY tutorials on You Tube. Jane's instructions are very precise as she demonstrates the Goldilocks of procedures, too much paint, too little, just right. The lead up to that module, "Photo Editing", also addressed an area that was shrouded in mystery. She is very professional in this area as she adresses the matter of copyright infringement straight up and encourages the use of one's own photos. The cost of the workshop was worth it for these two aspects alone. Her presentation style is calm and laid back, and one feels as though you are there in her studio having a cup of tea, watching an expert at work - the charming Australian accent is an added bonus (says the Canuck who thinks the Canadian accent isn't charming). I remain a little confused in the area of how to successfully communicate my printing needs at the print shop. This is not to say that her advice was in some way inadequate, I simply feel she cannot know/predict/anticipate the modus operandi followed by every print shop. For instance, I had to do my order online, and upload photos. The miscommunication might have been avoided had I had an actual conversation with them, and then returned home to upload following their exact advice. I was quite surprised at how the printer interpreted my instructions (which were crystal clear to my mind), and surprised at the paper on which they were printed. Much later, when Jane pulls out her stash of prints of her travel pics, she specifies the paper type (200 gsm silk or satin), and I think that might be what I received. The transfers worked well, although not perfectly, as I had not yet watched that specific module. Lesson learned. I look forward to putting all into practice - whenever life settles down. Thank you, Jane, for sharing your knowledge and experience with us.

Thx Jane for your clear and extensive explanation. Some parts of the course I browsed quite quickly because I am a experienced photographer and photoshopper. That's why I loved the clear chapters. I loved chapter six the most, because there you explain a lot about the amount of paint to use. Thank you for that. It makes a lot of things clear. Also I want to thank you for sharing your thoughts about what paint to use, and how to get a really good print from the copyshop. For me that is the main issue. I can not find a good one. Our library has a laserprinter and for now thats okay, but in the future I think I have higher demands. After pulling the prints I do a lot of post processing with a fine liner and watercolor paint. Love how the three work well (gelprint, fineliner and watercolor). If I had the choice I would give you 6 stars but you have to do with 5:-)

FAQs

  • I am a beginner! Is this course right for me?

This course is designed as an intermediate level course for those with some gelprinting experience, however I have included a module at the beginning for those who are new to gelprinting. So yes! The course is for beginners too!

  • What supplies will I need?

There are a few basic supplies you will need which Jane covers thoroughly in the first module. As a bare minimum to complete the course, you will need the following: *GELPLATE - preferably commercially made. Recommended brand are Gelliarts, Gel Press, Speedball. *A ROLLER/BRAYER *BLACK ACRYLIC PAINT – recommended brands/colours are either Amsterdam Oxide Black or Liquitex Basics Mars Black. *1-2 OTHER ACRYLIC PAINTS. *A SMARTPHONE with camera and in-built editing features. *ACCESS TO LASER PRINTER. DON’T buy a laser printer! Google printers and copy shops in your area that you have reasonable access to.

  • How many weeks is the course and how long can I access it?

The course is designed to be on-demand. There are 6 key areas with a bonus module. You can work through it all at your own pace and you'll get lifetime access through our Thinkific learning platform.

  • Can I use my inkjet printer?

No, this course uses a transfer method using toner-based laser prints. We'll cover some of this in the course and explain how the process works. You will need to have access to a quality laser printer but I recommend accessing one at a local copy shop or print centre.

  • Do I need to own or purchase a laser printer?

No, pleased don't. I recommend in the course not to bother purchasing your own laser printer - because many of them simply won't do the trick! I will tell you how and where to get your images printed to give you the best results using a local copy shop or print centre.

  • Will we learn how to transfer using magazine images?

Yes, there is one section on magazine image transfer in this course (due to popular demand!) but it is important to be aware of copyright and IP issues if you want to use a person’s image in your art without permission. This is why I mostly use my own photos and why this course will teach you how to also.

  • I am not a very good photographer. Will I still benefit from the course?

Yes! If you have a smartphone with in-built editing tools, then you can learn to take better photos! I go through the principles of great photography and teach you lots of tips and tricks to get images you will be proud of!
