Photography and Gelprinting

A Combined Online Course

This course is called Gelprinting for Photographers… but it could just as easily be called Photography for Gelprinters. Jane guides you through the foundations of good photography and then shares her signature, step-by-step approach to gelprinting, with a strong focus on laser image transfer.

What makes this course unique is the time Jane spends on her first love: photography. It’s a passion she has been developing for over 20 years, and it was photography that first led her to gelprinting as a way to bring thousands of images to life in a mixed-media form. From there, Jane shows you how to use photography intentionally in gelprinting, how to achieve consistently good results, and how to expand your techniques to enrich and elevate your finished artwork.

Who Is This Course For?

Jane Faase is a multi-talented artist who has been creating in many different forms and styles for over 30 years. Starting out as a calligraphy teacher, she has adapted and evolved her style and techniques over many years - incorporating different mediums and methods overtime. Gelprinting has become a favourite in recent years, as it brings together a variety of her passions and skills (photography, paper, collage, travel) and allows her to create new art in a style she loves. Jane has mastered the often fickle technique of laser image transfer on the gelplate and with her clear and comprehensive tuition, she is confident you will grow in your success with this method, helping you bring your photos to life in a new way. A Comment from Jane About This Course:

"I love photography. It fills my home in frames on the walls, reminding me of the beautiful places we’ve travelled and the moments I never want to forget. But I also love other things. I love travel, graphic design, printmaking, and typography. Over time, I discovered that gelprinting is where all of those passions come together for me.

If you’re coming to this course as a photographer, this is where you’ll learn how to take your images beyond the screen and into the physical world. I guide you step by step through the gelprinting process, showing you how to work with your photographs, how to use laser image transfer, and how to create layered, tactile prints that feel finished and intentional.

And if you’re coming from a gelprinting background, I hope the photography foundations and basics of laser printing help you. I also spend time demystifying laser image transfer in particular, breaking it down clearly and practically, so you can approach the process with confidence and get consistent, satisfying results."

As life goes, it took me awhile to get through the course, and at that I did not find the time to do all the tasks assigned; that I can return to it time and time again is a comfort. I signed up for this course because I was VERY frustrated with the image transfer process even though I had watched MANY tutorials on You Tube. Jane's instructions are very precise as she demonstrates the Goldilocks of procedures, too much paint, too little, just right. The lead up to that module, "Photo Editing", also addressed an area that was shrouded in mystery. She is very professional in this area as she adresses the matter of copyright infringement straight up and encourages the use of one's own photos. The cost of the workshop was worth it for these two aspects alone. Her presentation style is calm and laid back, and one feels as though you are there in her studio having a cup of tea, watching an expert at work - the charming Australian accent is an added bonus (says the Canuck who thinks the Canadian accent isn't charming). I remain a little confused in the area of how to successfully communicate my printing needs at the print shop. This is not to say that her advice was in some way inadequate, I simply feel she cannot know/predict/anticipate the modus operandi followed by every print shop. For instance, I had to do my order online, and upload photos. The miscommunication might have been avoided had I had an actual conversation with them, and then returned home to upload following their exact advice. I was quite surprised at how the printer interpreted my instructions (which were crystal clear to my mind), and surprised at the paper on which they were printed. Much later, when Jane pulls out her stash of prints of her travel pics, she specifies the paper type (200 gsm silk or satin), and I think that might be what I received. The transfers worked well, although not perfectly, as I had not yet watched that specific module. Lesson learned. I look forward to putting all into practice - whenever life settles down. Thank you, Jane, for sharing your knowledge and experience with us.
